Lake Aklaman Azigza Raises the Blue Flag in Morocco: A National First
Morocco’s First Blue Flag Lake: A Jewel in the Atlas Mountains
Nestled in the heart of the Middle Atlas Mountains, Lake Aguelmam Azegza shimmers as a beacon of sustainable tourism. This picturesque lake, located within the breathtaking Khenifra National Park, has recently been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag certification, a first for any lake in Morocco.
This accolade, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Throne Day, recognizes the lake’s exceptional natural beauty, diverse ecosystem, and commitment to environmental preservation. Surrounded by majestic cedar forests, Lake Aguelmam Azegza offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with nature while enjoying a range of eco-friendly activities.
The journey towards achieving Blue Flag status involved a collaborative effort, spearheaded by Mohammed Fettah, Governor of the Khenifra Province, along with the National Agency for Water and Forests and the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection. Their vision focused on enhancing the lake’s infrastructure while preserving its natural splendor.
A key aspect of this initiative was the development of sustainable tourism infrastructure. Funded by the Regional Council of Beni Mellal-Khenifra, a 20 million dirham investment brought about significant improvements, including:
Ample parking facilities: Ensuring convenient access for visitors.
Modern sanitary facilities: Providing comfort and hygiene.
Inviting green spaces: Creating a relaxing and aesthetically pleasing environment.
Clear signage and public lighting: Enhancing safety and accessibility for all.
Furthermore, the project embraced the principles of social and solidarity economy, aligning with the National Initiative for Human Development. Ten kiosks and thirty traditional Amazigh tents were constructed and equipped, providing opportunities for local communities to thrive. This 3.7 million dirham investment directly benefits 40 women and young entrepreneurs, empowering them to generate income through food vending and the sale of local crafts.
The Blue Flag certification positions Lake Aguelmam Azegza as a prime destination for ecotourism, both regionally and nationally. By expanding tourism offerings to include accommodation, recreational activities, and cultural experiences, the region aims to attract a wider audience seeking authentic and sustainable travel experiences.
This initiative exemplifies Morocco’s commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible tourism development. Lake Aguelmam Azegza stands as a shining example of how natural beauty, community engagement, and sustainable practices can create a harmonious and prosperous future.
