Moroccan PM Akhannouch Leads Delegation at COP29 Climate Summit in Baku
Morocco Champions Climate Action at COP29 in Baku
Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch led Morocco’s delegation to the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11th to 22nd, 2024. He was welcomed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the Olympic Stadium, underscoring the importance of this global gathering. Accompanying the Prime Minister were Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and Moroccan Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mohamed Adel Embarch.
Akhannouch toured the Moroccan and Azerbaijani pavilions within the stadium’s “Blue Zone,” a dedicated space for negotiations and discussions. He received briefings on both nations’ climate achievements, particularly in renewable energy, a sector where Morocco has made significant strides. For example, the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Power Station, one of the largest concentrated solar power plants in the world, showcases Morocco’s commitment to a sustainable future. This aligns with the global push towards renewables, as evidenced by the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) reporting on the accelerating growth of renewable energy capacity worldwide. COP29 served as a crucial platform for evaluating global progress in mitigating climate change and exploring innovative solutions. The conference placed a strong emphasis on climate finance, recognizing the urgent need to empower all countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is particularly critical for vulnerable communities disproportionately impacted by the escalating consequences of climate change. The focus on financial mechanisms echoes the ongoing debate surrounding the $100 billion annual climate finance commitment from developed countries to developing nations, a key element of the Paris Agreement. Morocco’s participation in COP29 highlights the nation’s dedication to addressing the climate crisis. The country has set ambitious targets for reducing emissions and expanding renewable energy capacity, contributing to global efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This commitment is not only vital for environmental protection but also for economic development and social well-being. As climate change increasingly impacts water resources, agriculture, and other key sectors, Morocco’s proactive approach to climate adaptation and mitigation becomes even more critical. The discussions and collaborations at COP29 are essential for forging a collective path towards a sustainable future. By sharing best practices, fostering innovation, and securing the necessary financial resources, the international community can work together to address the complex challenges posed by climate change and build a more resilient world for generations to come.
