Morocco Vows to Implement UN Future Pact at Summit
Morocco Champions Global Cooperation for Peace and Sustainable Development at UN Summit
New York – At the recent UN Summit of the Future, Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to the newly adopted “Pact for the Future.” This pact aims to revitalize multilateralism, placing peace, sustainable development, and inclusive growth at the heart of global action.
Speaking at the summit convened by the UN Secretary-General, Akhannouch emphasized the critical need to prioritize peace, stability, and development in collective efforts. He called for an inclusive global approach founded on trust, dialogue, and mutual respect.
“Renewing multilateralism must be anchored in a genuine political will to work together, fostering inclusive solutions based on fairness, legitimacy, and solidarity,” Akhannouch stated. He highlighted the significance of the summit, particularly in a world grappling with complex challenges. It presented a unique opportunity to reaffirm commitment to the UN Charter and inject new momentum into the multilateral system.
Akhannouch echoed the call to action made by King Mohammed VI in his message to the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund annual meetings held in Marrakech. The King stressed the need to reform institutions and regulations governing multilateralism in light of recent economic, social, and political shifts.
Underscoring the importance of Africa in the global landscape, Akhannouch urged the UN to prioritize the continent’s needs. He emphasized the potential to transform Africa’s current challenges into opportunities for development and prosperity.
Addressing the pressing issue of climate change, Akhannouch outlined Morocco’s ambitious goals. The nation has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030 and increasing investments in renewable energy, including green hydrogen. This aligns with their target of exceeding 52% clean energy in their electricity mix by 2030.
Akhannouch also highlighted Morocco’s progress in social protection, food security, and healthcare. These achievements demonstrate the nation’s commitment to building a more resilient and equitable society.
The Summit of the Future, held alongside the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, brought together world leaders, representatives from international organizations, and civil society. The event culminated in the adoption of the Pact for the Future, which includes commitments to bridge the digital divide and accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
Morocco’s active participation and commitment to the Pact for the Future underscore the nation’s dedication to global cooperation and building a more peaceful and sustainable future for all.
