52 Moroccans Released from Algerian Prisons in Act of Cross-Border Cooperation
Oujda, Morocco – In a heartwarming display of cross-border cooperation, Algerian authorities released 52 Moroccan citizens from their prisons on Monday, September 16th, 2024. The group, which included women and minors, had completed their sentences and were handed over to Moroccan authorities at the Zouj Bghal border crossing in Oujda.
The Moroccan Association for the Assistance of Migrants in Difficult Situations in Oujda reported that the former detainees hailed from various regions across Morocco, including Fez, Meknes, Oujda, Azilal, Taza, Taounate, ورززات, Demnate, El Jadida, Berrechid, Tangier, and the Strait of Gibraltar region. The association confirmed that the majority of those released had been serving their sentences in prisons located in central Algeria.
While the specific nature of their offenses remains undisclosed, this act of releasing prisoners who have served their time speaks volumes about the potential for positive relations between the two nations. It’s a reminder that even amidst complex geopolitical situations, shared humanity and compassion can pave the way for understanding and cooperation.
This event comes at a time when cross-border relations between Algeria and Morocco are strained. The border between the two countries has been closed since 1994, and diplomatic relations were severed in 2021. However, this recent release of prisoners offers a glimmer of hope for improved relations in the future.
The release of these Moroccan citizens is a positive step towards building trust and fostering a more humane approach to cross-border relations. It serves as a reminder that dialogue and cooperation are essential for addressing the challenges faced by both nations.
