Heavy Rain and Snow Sweep Across Morocco

Morocco Braces for Widespread Rain and Snow
Morocco’s diverse landscapes, from the bustling cities of Tangier and Rabat to the towering peaks of the Atlas Mountains, are preparing for a significant weather event. The Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a forecast predicting widespread rain and snow across the country, impacting various regions and prompting residents to prepare for potentially challenging conditions. This weather system, expected to bring much-needed precipitation, also carries the potential for localized flooding and travel disruptions.
A Wave of Precipitation Sweeps Across the Nation
Thursday’s forecast calls for continued rainfall and thunderstorms, potentially accompanied by hail, across several regions. Tangier, the Gharb region, the Rif Mountains, and the western Mediterranean coast are all expected to experience these conditions. Further inland, the northern and central Atlantic plains, the phosphate and diamond plateaus, Saiss, the Atlas Mountains, and the interior regions of Chaouia, Doukkala, Abda, Chiadma, and Souss will also see rainfall. Even the remaining central plains, the northern eastern region, the eastern Mediterranean coast, and the northwestern parts of the southern provinces can expect some scattered showers.
Snowfall Blankets the High Atlas
The DGM also anticipates significant snowfall in the higher elevations of the Rif and the High and Middle Atlas Mountains, particularly above 2000 meters (approximately 6,560 feet). This snowfall, expected to continue into Thursday night, could create hazardous driving conditions in mountain passes and impact local communities. The combination of rain and melting snow can also contribute to increased river flows and potential flooding in lower-lying areas. Morocco, like many countries in the region, faces increasing challenges related to water scarcity, so this precipitation, while disruptive in the short term, is crucial for replenishing reservoirs and supporting agriculture. According to the World Resources Institute’s Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas, Morocco faces “high” baseline water stress, meaning that more than 40% of its available water is withdrawn annually for human use. This underscores the importance of precipitation events like this one.
Temperature Fluctuations and Coastal Conditions
Temperatures are expected to remain relatively cool, with frost or ice possible in the mornings and nights in the Atlas and Rif regions. Low temperatures will range from -3°C to 2°C (26.6°F to 35.6°F) in the High Atlas, 2°C to 9°C (35.6°F to 48.2°F) in the rest of the Atlas, Rif, eastern high plateaus, and southeastern slopes, and 10°C to 17°C (50°F to 62.6°F) in the remaining areas. Daytime temperatures are predicted to rise slightly in the eastern region but decrease in other areas. Coastal regions will experience varying sea conditions. The Mediterranean coast is expected to be calm to slightly choppy, while the Strait of Gibraltar will be slightly choppy to rough. North of Tan-Tan, the sea will be rough to very rough, and south of Tan-Tan, conditions will range from slightly choppy to rough. These conditions could impact maritime activities and coastal communities.
Staying Safe During Inclement Weather
Residents and travelers in affected areas are advised to take precautions and stay informed about weather updates. This includes checking road conditions before traveling, especially in mountainous areas, and being prepared for potential power outages or disruptions to other services. The DGM continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed.
