Arab League Adopts Moroccan-Driven Resolutions
Morocco Spearheads Key Initiatives at Arab League Economic and Social Council Meeting
Cairo, Egypt – Morocco took center stage at the 114th session of the Arab League’s Economic and Social Council (ESC), held in Cairo on September 5th, 2024. The Kingdom presented several impactful resolutions that were subsequently adopted by the council, highlighting Morocco’s commitment to pan-Arab development and cooperation.
The Moroccan delegation, led by Mr. Mohamed Ait Ouali, Ambassador of the Kingdom in Cairo and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, championed a resolution focusing on a critical issue facing the Arab world: lifelong learning. Recognizing the transformative power of education and its impact on individual and societal progress, the resolution calls for the development of a comprehensive Arab Strategy for Lifelong Learning.
This initiative, a testament to Morocco’s proactive approach, will see the Arab League Secretariat collaborate with key stakeholders, including Morocco, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the Arab Labor Organization, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, and the Union of Arab Universities. This collaborative effort aims to draft and disseminate the strategy among member states, paving the way for its presentation and adoption at a future ESC session.
Morocco’s innovative strides in the postal sector also took the spotlight. The council lauded Morocco’s work on the Integrated Index for Postal Development, released by the Universal Postal Union in 2023. The index serves as a valuable tool for measuring and improving postal development, a crucial aspect of economic growth and social inclusion in today’s interconnected world. The council urged other Arab nations to draw inspiration from Morocco’s experience and adopt similar measures to enhance their postal sectors.
Furthermore, recognizing the expertise developed by Morocco’s postal service, the council encouraged other Arab countries to participate in training programs organized by Barid Al-Maghrib (Morocco Post) in collaboration with the Universal Postal Union. These programs focus on vital areas such as postal security, combating intellectual property crimes, and handling dangerous goods transported through the postal network.
The meeting also saw the adoption of a resolution emphasizing the crucial role of social support in achieving equity and equal opportunities in education. This resolution, reflecting Morocco’s dedication to social justice, will be further deliberated upon by the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs.
Beyond these resolutions, the ESC meeting served as a platform to discuss a range of pressing economic and social issues impacting the Arab world. These included the implementation of previous council resolutions, the economic and social file for the upcoming Arab League Summit in Iraq, the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, and developments within the Arab Customs Union.
