Mystery Smoke Rising from Earth Puzzles Residents in Azilal, Morocco
A plume of unexplained white smoke billowing from the ground has sparked curiosity and concern in the Azilal region of Morocco. The strange phenomenon, occurring in the rural pastures of Tankaraf near the village of Taklefet, was first reported by locals on social media. Images and videos of the smoke quickly circulated, prompting a swift response from authorities.
Local officials, along with representatives from the Water and Forestry department, were dispatched to the area to investigate the unusual event. According to Moroccan news outlet Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, the smoke appears to be emanating from fissures in the earth. The volume and density of the smoke are reportedly unusual for the area, further deepening the mystery.
The lack of a clear explanation has fueled speculation among residents. Some believe the smoke could be linked to illicit human activities, while others entertain the possibility of dormant volcanic activity. While Morocco is not located along a major tectonic plate boundary, it does experience occasional seismic activity. In 2004, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Al Hoceima region, causing significant damage and loss of life.
A committee comprising local authorities and Water and Forestry officials has been formed to investigate the phenomenon. Their findings are expected to be released in the coming days, hopefully shedding light on the source of the smoke and alleviating any concerns among the local population.
