King’s Speech Reinforces Morocco’s Unity and Stability
King Mohammed VI’s Green March Speech: A Renewed Vision for Moroccan Unity and Stability
King Mohammed VI’s address on the 49th anniversary of the Green March delivered a powerful message reaffirming Morocco’s sovereignty over its Southern Provinces, often referred to as Western Sahara. The speech, delivered on November 6th, 2024, went beyond mere commemoration, outlining a refreshed approach to securing lasting stability and prosperity for the region. It emphasized the importance of development and international cooperation while reiterating Morocco’s unwavering commitment to its territorial integrity.
The Green March, a pivotal moment in Moroccan history, saw over 350,000 unarmed Moroccans march into the then-Spanish Sahara in 1975. This peaceful demonstration of national unity and determination ultimately led to the return of the territory to Morocco. The King’s recent speech underscored the continued relevance of the Green March spirit, calling for renewed dedication to the region’s progress. He highlighted the significant investments made in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, transforming the Southern Provinces into a hub for economic growth and social development. This commitment to development is evident in projects like the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Power Station, one of the largest concentrated solar power plants in the world, which contributes significantly to Morocco’s renewable energy goals and creates jobs in the region.
The King’s speech also addressed the ongoing political complexities surrounding the Western Sahara issue. He reiterated Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the “most serious and credible basis” for resolving the dispute, a plan that has garnered increasing international support. This proposal, presented to the United Nations in 2007, offers significant self-governance to the region while remaining under Moroccan sovereignty. The King emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and cooperation with international partners to achieve a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution. This aligns with the increasing recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan by countries like the United States, which recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020. Several other nations have followed suit, opening consulates in the Southern Provinces, further solidifying Morocco’s position.
Beyond the political dimension, the King’s speech focused on the human element. He emphasized the importance of empowering the local population and ensuring their full participation in the region’s development. This includes promoting cultural preservation, supporting local businesses, and investing in education and training to equip the youth with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st-century economy
