Morocco Unveils New 20 Dirham Banknote Celebrating Heritage and Progress
Rabat, Morocco – In a move coinciding with Youth Day celebrations, Bank Al-Maghrib, Morocco’s central bank, has released a new 20 dirham banknote. This vibrant new note is more than just currency; it’s a beautifully designed tribute to Morocco’s rich architectural heritage and its exciting socio-cultural evolution.
The front of the note features a portrait of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, alongside the national emblem and an intricate architectural motif inspired by traditional Moroccan doorways. Adding to the visual appeal is a stylized depiction of the University of Al Quaraouiyine in Fez, a testament to Morocco’s enduring legacy of scholarship.
Flipping the note over reveals a tapestry of Moroccan landmarks and cultural symbols. Artistic representations of the Grand Theatre of Rabat and the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art showcase the nation’s vibrant cultural scene. A bustling sports stadium speaks to Morocco’s passion for athletics, while a stylized image of the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, highlights the country’s architectural wonders.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the new 20 dirham banknote incorporates cutting-edge security features. These include a color-shifting security thread with dynamic movement, an iridescent band on the back, tactile markings for the visually impaired, and ascending serial numbers. These measures ensure the note’s authenticity and security, reflecting the Bank Al-Maghrib’s commitment to staying ahead of counterfeiting threats.
The design and production of the new banknote were entrusted entirely to the skilled Moroccan experts at Dar As-Sikkah, the national mint. This decision underscores the country’s commitment to fostering local talent and expertise.
The release of the new 20 dirham banknote marks another chapter in Morocco’s ongoing currency evolution. It serves as a tangible reminder of the nation’s rich history, its vibrant present, and its promising future.
