CAF Removes Age Limit: Is This Hany Abo Rida’s Path Back to Power?
In a move sending ripples through African football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has abolished its age limit for presidential candidates. This decision, made during the general assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has opened the door for potential comebacks, most notably for 71-year-old Egyptian football administrator, Hany Abo Rida.
Previously, a candidate couldn’t be older than 70 to vie for a seat on the executive committee. This rule effectively barred individuals like Abo Rida from seeking leadership positions within the organization. However, the recent amendment has effectively removed this barrier, potentially paving the way for experienced figures to re-enter the African football scene.
This development has sparked widespread speculation about Abo Rida’s future ambitions. A prominent figure in African football, Abo Rida previously served as CAF president from 2017 to 2019. His tenure, however, was cut short due to allegations of financial impropriety, which he has consistently denied.
While the age limit removal doesn’t guarantee Abo Rida’s return to CAF’s helm, it undeniably presents him with an opportunity. Whether he chooses to capitalize on this change and contest the next election remains to be seen.
