COVID-19 Cases Surge in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Region of Morocco
COVID-19 Makes a Comeback in Morocco’s Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Region
Rabat, Morocco – While the world breathes a collective sigh of relief as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes, a recent uptick in cases in Morocco’s Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region serves as a stark reminder that the virus is still circulating. The Ministry of Health and Social Protection reported three new COVID-19 cases in the region for the week of August 24-30, 2024.
This news comes as the country continues its robust vaccination campaign. As of the latest report, over 24.9 million people have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 23.4 million fully vaccinated with two doses. The commitment to vaccination is further evidenced by the 6.8 million individuals who have received their third dose, and over 61,000 who have opted for a fourth dose.
Despite these encouraging vaccination numbers, the recent cases highlight the importance of continued vigilance. The Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region accounted for two of the three new cases, with the remaining case reported in the Souss-Massa region. The national weekly positivity rate currently stands at 6.1%, a figure that bears close monitoring in the coming weeks.
Since the pandemic’s start in March 2020, Morocco has recorded a total of 1,279,424 confirmed COVID-19 cases. The total number of deaths remains at 16,309, resulting in a case fatality rate of 1.3%. Currently, there are three active cases nationwide.
While the recent rise in cases is concerning, it’s important to remember that the situation is vastly different from the pandemic’s peak. Global health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), continue to emphasize the importance of vaccination, booster shots, and responsible public health measures like handwashing and mask-wearing in crowded spaces, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
