Fes Administrative Court Removes Imzouren Mayor and Deputy From Office
Imzourene Officials Removed From Office Following Allegations of Mismanagement
The administrative court in Fez has ruled to remove the president and first deputy of the Imzourene commune from office, following a request from the governor of the Al Hoceima province, Hassan Zitoun. This decision comes amidst allegations of serious administrative and financial misconduct.
The court’s ruling, delivered on September 30th, 2024, effectively removes both officials from their positions and strips them of their membership in the Imzourene communal council. The decision is effective immediately.
This action follows a period of investigation by the General Inspectorate of Territorial Administration (IGAT) prompted by numerous complaints from citizens and stakeholders. The complaints centered around allegations of severe mismanagement, particularly in the areas of urban planning and construction permits.
Among the most serious concerns were the proliferation of unauthorized construction, often referred to as “slum housing,” and irregularities in granting water and electricity connections. These issues point to a potential breakdown in governance and potential corruption within the Imzourene commune.
The governor’s request for dismissal, coupled with the court’s decision, underscores the seriousness of the allegations. The case may be referred to the public prosecutor’s office for further investigation into potential financial and administrative corruption. If pursued, the case could be tried in a specialized court dedicated to financial crimes.
This situation highlights the crucial role of government oversight and accountability mechanisms in ensuring good governance at the local level. The removal of elected officials, while a significant step, is a reminder of the importance of transparency and ethical conduct in public service.
