Figuig Holds By-Elections for 9 Council Seats After Mass Resignation
Figuig Prepares for By-Elections Following Mass Resignations
Figuig, Morocco – The city of Figuig is gearing up for a crucial by-election on September 12th, 2024, to fill nine vacant seats on its local council. This follows the unprecedented resignation of nine council members in May, a direct response to the establishment of the Eastern Regional Electricity Distribution Company and amidst widespread local protests.
The resignations, representing half of the council members, were a powerful statement against the perceived disregard for residents’ concerns regarding the new company. The dissenting members, primarily from the opposition, had previously challenged the legality of the vote to join the regional company in October 2023, citing procedural irregularities. Their appeal, filed with the Oujda Administrative Court, was ultimately rejected.
This mass resignation triggered the need for by-elections in seven electoral districts (1, 3, 4, 5, 10, 12, and 13) to ensure continued representation and governance. The nomination process for candidates began on Monday, August 26th, and will continue until Thursday, August 29th. Following this, a campaign period will run until September 11th, culminating in the by-elections.
The upcoming by-elections hold significant weight, offering residents a chance to voice their opinions on the recent events and elect representatives who align with their vision for Figuig’s future. The outcome will likely influence the dynamics of the council and its approach to critical issues, including the controversial regional electricity company.
This situation underscores the importance of local governance and citizen engagement in Morocco. It highlights the power of collective action and the potential for citizens to influence decisions that directly impact their lives. The by-elections in Figuig serve as a potent reminder of the ongoing dialogue between citizens and their elected officials, shaping the future of their communities.
