African Football Mourns the Loss of Visionary Leader Issa Hayatou
The world of African football is in mourning following the passing of Issa Hayatou, the former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Hayatou, who led the organization from 1988 to 2017, left an indelible mark on the sport, transforming it from a fledgling entity into a powerful force on the global stage.
Current CAF president Patrice Motsepe expressed his deep sorrow in an official statement, reflecting on Hayatou’s immense contributions. “CAF and African football will be eternally grateful for Hayatou’s unwavering dedication and far-reaching impact on the development and growth of football in Africa over many years,” Motsepe shared. “He will forever be remembered in our hearts and minds.”

Under his leadership, the Africa Cup of Nations, the continent’s premier international tournament, expanded from eight to sixteen teams, significantly increasing its global profile and revenue.
