Morocco Announces Rajab 1446 to Begin Thursday, January 2nd
Rajab 1446 AH Begins Thursday, January 2nd, 2025
The Moroccan Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has announced that the first day of Rajab 1446 AH will fall on Thursday, January 2nd, 2025. This follows the unsuccessful sighting of the new moon on Tuesday evening, December 31st, 2024.
The Ministry diligently sought confirmation of the new moon’s appearance. After sunset on Tuesday, corresponding to the 29th of Jumada al-Akhirah 1446 AH, they contacted all Islamic Affairs delegations across the kingdom, as well as units of the Royal Armed Forces involved in moon sighting. However, no confirmed sightings were reported.
Consequently, the Ministry concluded that the month of Jumada al-Akhirah would complete its 30-day cycle, establishing Thursday, January 2nd, 2025, as the start of Rajab.
This announcement carries special significance for Muslims worldwide, as Rajab is one of the four sacred months in Islam (https://islamqa.info/en/answers/100000/the-sacred-months). It marks a period of increased spiritual reflection and preparation for the coming of Ramadan. Historically, warfare was prohibited during these sacred months, highlighting their importance for peace and contemplation. Today, Muslims are encouraged to increase their good deeds and devotion during Rajab.
The Ministry extended blessings and prayers for a prosperous and blessed month for King Mohammed VI of Morocco, the Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, Prince Moulay Rachid, and the entire Royal Family. They also wished for progress and prosperity for the Moroccan people and the entire Muslim community. The beginning of Rajab often serves as a time for families and communities to come together, sharing meals and engaging in acts of charity.
The determination of the Islamic lunar calendar relies on the visual sighting of the new moon, a practice rooted in centuries of tradition. While astronomical calculations can predict the new moon’s appearance, the actual visual confirmation remains the deciding factor for many Muslim communities globally. This sometimes leads to variations in the start dates of Islamic months between different countries or regions.
