Morocco Announces Start of Rabi’ al-Thani 1446 AH
Rabat, Morocco – The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in Morocco has announced that the first day of Rabi’ al-Thani, the fourth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, will fall on Saturday, October 5th, 2024.
This announcement follows the traditional sighting of the new moon, a practice central to determining the Islamic lunar calendar. On the evening of Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, corresponding to the 29th of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1446 AH, the Ministry, along with representatives across the kingdom and units of the Royal Armed Forces, diligently observed the sky for any sign of the new moon.
However, after careful observation, no sighting was confirmed. As a result, the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal was determined to be a full 30 days, leading to the start of Rabi’ al-Thani on October 5th.
The Ministry conveyed its blessings to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Commander of the Faithful and protector of the nation and faith, wishing him continued health and prosperity. Similar well wishes were extended to the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Moulay El Hassan, his brother, His Royal Highness Moulay Rachid, and the entire Royal Family. The Ministry concluded by praying for progress and prosperity for the Moroccan people and the entire Islamic Ummah.
The Islamic lunar calendar, based on the cycles of the moon, plays a crucial role in religious observances for Muslims worldwide. The start of each month, including significant periods like Ramadan and the two Eids, is determined by the sighting of the new moon. This reliance on lunar observation fosters a sense of community and shared anticipation within the Muslim world.
