Moroccan Consumers Held Hostage: Consumer Protection Groups Sound the Alarm
Moroccan Consumers Feeling the Pinch as Prices Soar and Oversight Lags
Consumer protection groups in Morocco are sounding the alarm as citizens grapple with skyrocketing prices for essential goods, exacerbated by a lack of government oversight and rampant price gouging.
The National Federation of Consumer Protection Associations (FNAC) has publicly called on the government to take immediate action to curb the relentless rise in prices. Consumers are expressing frustration and anger over what they perceive as inadequate monitoring of the marketplace, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation.
Zakaria Majraoui, Vice President of FNAC, expressed concern over the lack of transparency from authorities regarding the consecutive price hikes on essential goods. He highlighted the role of intermediaries who operate with little to no regulatory oversight, manipulating the market and driving up costs for everyday Moroccans.
The lack of control over the quality of goods, particularly meat products in rural areas, is another pressing concern. FNAC urges organizations like the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) to step up their efforts to ensure the health and safety of consumers.
Adding to the frustration, consumers are increasingly falling victim to scams and fraud, particularly in the realm of visa appointments. FNAC reports that intermediaries are going as far as withdrawing money from unsuspecting citizens’ accounts without their consent. They are demanding investigations and stricter penalties for those who exploit vulnerable consumers.
While the government has stated its commitment to protecting consumers, the continued escalation of prices raises serious questions about the effectiveness of their measures. This situation puts increasing pressure on the government to find swift and impactful solutions to this growing crisis.
