In a move aimed at optimizing interior-ministry-dismisses-30-elected-officials-amidst-corruption-crackdown/” title=”Moroccan Interior Ministry Crackdown: 30 Officials Suspended, More to Come”>local governance, Morocco’s Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, has officially redefined the territorial boundaries of several communes across the nation. This decision, announced on October 15, 2024, impacts regions including Fez, Moulay Yaacoub, Salé, Nador, and Guelmim.
The Ministry of Interior emphasized that these adjustments were made in full compliance with existing legal frameworks. These include Law No. 131.12, which outlines the principles for defining territorial districts, and Decree No. 2.15.577, issued on July 24, 2015, which specifies the number, geographical limits, names, and elected representation of districts within each region.
The redrawn boundaries affect a diverse range of communes, reflecting a commitment to tailored governance solutions:
Fez: The city of Fez, along with its associated districts, sees adjustments, as do the communes of Mechouar Fes Jdid, Oulad Tayeb, Sidi Harazem, and Ain Bida.
Moulay Yaacoub: Changes impact the communes of Ain Cheggag, Sebt El Odaya, Ain Kansra, Sebaa Rouadi, and Ain Bouali.
Salé and Nador: The commune of Salé, its constituent districts, Sidi Abi Al Qنادل, and Amer, as well as the communes of Nador and Bouarg in the Nador province, are all affected.
Guelmim: Four communes – Timoulay, Assrir, Fask, and Tagjijt – have undergone boundary revisions.
This initiative aligns with Morocco’s ongoing efforts to enhance decentralization and improve the effectiveness of local governance. By refining administrative boundaries, the government aims to better align resources with local needs, promote balanced development, and ensure that citizens have greater access to essential services.
The impact of these boundary changes will be closely monitored to assess their effectiveness in achieving these goals. This proactive approach to local governance underscores Morocco’s commitment to creating a more responsive and efficient administrative system for the benefit of all its citizens.
