Morocco Takes the Helm: 57th UN Human Rights Council Session Kicks Off in Geneva
Geneva, Switzerland – The global spotlight shines on human rights as the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) commenced on Monday in Geneva, with Morocco assuming the presidency for 2024.
Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, presided over the opening session. He outlined the session’s ambitious agenda, highlighting the numerous reports and resolutions to be addressed.
A key focus of the session is the annual report by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk. Mr. Türk’s report, which will be open for discussion on Tuesday and Wednesday, provides a comprehensive overview of the global human rights landscape, drawing attention to pressing concerns in various regions.
This year’s session promises to be particularly demanding. Over the next five weeks, the Council will delve into a staggering 80 reports on human rights situations worldwide. Ambassador Zniber emphasized the importance of ensuring smooth and productive discussions throughout the session. He stressed Morocco’s commitment to maximizing the Council’s impact, particularly in amplifying the voices of small island states, despite the ongoing financial challenges faced by the United Nations.
