Atlas Lions Roar: Morocco Dominates Gabon in 4-1 AFCON Qualifier Victory
Agadir, Morocco – The Atlas Lions of Morocco roared to a convincing 4-1 victory over Gabon in a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Grand Stade d’Agadir. The home side’s attacking prowess was on full display, securing a crucial win that solidifies their position in the race to the 2025 AFCON tournament.
Right from the first whistle, Morocco established their dominance, controlling possession and relentlessly pressing the Gabonese defense. This early pressure paid off with two penalty kicks awarded in quick succession. Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech stepped up confidently, converting both penalties in the 10th and 26th minutes to give Morocco a commanding 2-0 lead.
Gabon, determined to fight back, managed to pull one back just before halftime. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon’s captain and talisman, successfully converted a penalty of their own in the 40th minute, offering a glimmer of hope for the visitors.
However, Morocco refused to let up in the second half. Their relentless attacking pressure continued, and they soon found themselves celebrating once again. In the 59th minute, a swift counter-attack saw Abde Ezzalzouli deliver a pinpoint cross into the box, finding Brahim Díaz who unleashed a powerful strike into the back of the net, extending Morocco’s lead to 3-1.
The final blow came in the 82nd minute, courtesy of Ayoub El Kaabi. A perfectly weighted pass from Azzedine Ounahi found El Kaabi in a dangerous position, and he made no mistake, slotting the ball home to secure a resounding 4-1 victory for the Atlas Lions.
This dominant performance showcased the attacking potential of the Moroccan team. With their fluid passing, creative playmaking, and clinical finishing, they proved to be a force to be reckoned with. This victory not only strengthens Morocco’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON but also serves as a testament to the team’s continuous development under manager Walid Regragui.
The Atlas Lions, having reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, are aiming to carry their impressive form into the AFCON, a tournament they last won in 1976. With performances like this, they are undoubtedly a team to watch out for on the African continent.
