Battle for Rabat-Ocean Seat Heats Up: New Candidates Emerge Amidst Secrecy
Rabat’s Political Stage Heats Up: A Battle for the “Circle of Death”
The political landscape in Rabat, Morocco is buzzing with anticipation as a crucial by-election approaches. The “Circle of Death,” a nickname given to the Rabat-Ocean electoral district due to its historically fierce competition, is witnessing a flurry of activity as parties strategize and candidates throw their hats into the ring.
The by-election, scheduled for September 12, 2024, was triggered by the Constitutional Court’s decision to strip Abdel Rahim Waslam Ben Mohamed of his parliamentary seat. This decision, announced on July 2nd, 2024, cited violations of Article 91, Clause 5 of the House of Representatives’ organizational law.
Adding to the intrigue, the National Rally of Independents (RNI), a major player in Moroccan politics, is keeping its cards close to its chest. While the party has confirmed that seven potential candidates are under consideration, they remain tight-lipped about their final choice. This silence has only fueled speculation and heightened the suspense surrounding the election.
Among the hopefuls vying for the RNI’s endorsement are prominent figures like Saad Benmbarek, the party’s regional coordinator for the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, and Amin Sadiq, the Deputy Mayor of Rabat. Adding another layer of intrigue, Mourad طالب, a former party coordinator with an impressive academic background, has also formally requested the RNI’s nomination.
Meanwhile, other political parties are wasting no time in solidifying their positions. The Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD) has announced Farouk El Mdaouar as their candidate. The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) is reportedly leaning towards nominating the son of Said Tounarti, a prominent RNI advisor in the Rabat City Council. The Justice and Development Party (PJD) has officially endorsed Abdel Samad Abuzahir, their regional secretary in Rabat.
With multiple parties and candidates vying for the same seat, the “Circle of Death” is living up to its name. The upcoming by-election promises to be a captivating contest, reflecting the dynamism and evolving nature of Moroccan politics.
