Morocco’s Ministry of Interior Appoints First-Ever Spokesperson
In a move signaling a commitment to transparency and open communication, Morocco’s Ministry of Interior has appointed its first-ever official spokesperson. This newly created position underscores the Ministry’s dedication to keeping the public informed on critical issues.
Rachid El Khalfi, formerly the Secretary General of the Directorate of Internal Affairs within the Ministry, has been chosen for this important role. El Khalfi is a familiar face to many Moroccans, having become a prominent figure during the COVID-19 pandemic. He played a crucial role in disseminating information about vaccination efforts and regulations. His expertise was again called upon during the devastating earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region on September 8, 2023, where he provided timely updates on casualty figures and the extent of the damage.
This appointment reflects a growing global trend towards government transparency and proactive communication. According to the World Bank, countries with greater government transparency tend to experience less corruption and higher levels of public trust. By establishing a direct line of communication with the public, the Ministry of Interior aims to foster a more open and accountable relationship with the citizens it serves.
El Khalfi’s first official act as spokesperson was to address the press regarding the recent severe thunderstorms that impacted seventeen provinces and prefectures across Morocco. He reported a provisional death toll of eleven, with seven fatalities in Tata, two in Tiznit, and two in Errachidia (including one foreign national). He also confirmed that nine individuals were still missing in the provinces of Tata, Errachidia, and Taroudant.
The creation of this spokesperson position marks a significant step forward for the Ministry of Interior.
