Morocco Braces for Thunderstorms, Hail, and Strong Winds
The Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology (DMG) has issued an orange-level warning for thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds expected to impact several regions of the country.
The alert, issued on Thursday, August 29, 2024, predicts these severe weather conditions will begin in the afternoon and last until 10 pm local time. The affected areas include the provinces and prefectures of Oujda-Angad, Jerada, Taourirt, Taza, Guercif, Boulemane, and Al Hoceima.
This warning comes on the heels of similar weather experienced on Wednesday in several regions. Boulemane, Taza, Ifrane, Khénifra, Midelt, Sefrou, Al Hoceima, Guercif, Driouch, Jerada, and Taourirt all faced powerful thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong winds, prompting the DMG to issue an orange-level alert.
Understanding Weather Alerts
Weather alerts are crucial for public safety, providing timely information about potentially dangerous conditions. The DMG utilizes a color-coded system to communicate the severity of weather events:
Green: No particular vigilance required.
Yellow: Be attentive; locally dangerous phenomena are possible.
Orange: Be very vigilant; dangerous phenomena are forecast.
Red: Absolute vigilance is required; exceptionally dangerous phenomena are forecast.
Staying Safe During Severe Weather
During thunderstorms, it’s essential to take precautions to ensure safety. Here are some tips:
Seek shelter indoors or in a hard-top vehicle.
Stay away from windows and doors.
Avoid using electrical appliances.
If caught outdoors, find a low-lying area and stay away from trees.
* Be aware of flash flood risks, especially in low-lying areas.
The DMG continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed and follow safety recommendations.
