Severe Weather Warning: Thunderstorms, Hail, and Strong Winds to Impact Morocco
Morocco Braces for Thunderstorms, Hail, and Strong Winds
The Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology (DMN) has issued a severe weather warning for several regions, forecasting thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds expected to hit on Wednesday and Thursday.
The DMN issued a Red Alert for the Figuig province, anticipating the most intense weather. Rainfall between 70 to 90 mm is expected to begin Wednesday afternoon and last until the early hours of Thursday morning.
An Orange Alert has been issued for the provinces of Jerada, Boulemane, Midelt, and Errachidia, with rainfall expected to reach 50 to 70 mm. The Oujda-Angad and Taourirt provinces are also under the Orange Alert, with forecasts predicting 30 to 50 mm of rainfall. These areas can expect severe weather starting Wednesday afternoon, lasting until late Wednesday evening.
These types of intense weather events can lead to flash floods, especially in areas with poor drainage systems. Strong winds can cause property damage and disrupt transportation. The hailstorms predicted have the potential to damage crops and vehicles.
The DMN urges residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions:
Stay informed about weather updates through official channels.
Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense weather.
Secure loose objects outdoors that could be blown away by strong winds.
Be prepared for potential power outages.
* If driving, exercise extreme caution, especially in areas prone to flooding.
Morocco, like many parts of the world, is experiencing increasingly unpredictable and severe weather patterns. These events highlight the importance of early warning systems and preparedness to mitigate the impact of such weather phenomena.
