Morocco Braces for a Day of Dramatic Weather
Coastal fog, thunderstorms, and strong winds are all on the horizon for Morocco as the country experiences a varied weather forecast.
The Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology has issued a forecast predicting a dynamic weather system impacting the nation on Monday. Coastal regions, particularly in the north and central areas, can expect low-lying clouds and fog during the night and early morning hours.
Further south, the forecast takes a dramatic turn. The southern provinces are bracing for thunderstorms, while the southeastern regions are expected to experience partly cloudy skies with a chance of localized rain and thunder.
Adding to the mix, strong winds are anticipated along the central coasts and southern regions, with the potential for sandstorms in some areas.
Temperature Fluctuations Across the Nation
Temperatures across Morocco will vary significantly. The Tadla plains, southeastern regions, eastern parts of the southern provinces, and the central coast will experience milder temperatures, ranging from 21 to 27 degrees Celsius. The rest of the country can expect cooler temperatures, between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius. However, daytime temperatures are predicted to rise throughout the country.
Coastal Waters Remain Generally Calm
Despite the varied weather on land, coastal waters are expected to remain relatively calm. The Mediterranean coast and the Strait of Gibraltar will experience calm to slightly choppy waters. North of Cape Spartel, conditions will be slightly choppy, while the remaining coastal areas may experience slightly choppy to rough seas.
Recent Flooding Highlights Vulnerability to Extreme Weather
This diverse weather forecast comes on the heels of recent severe weather events that have impacted Morocco. The Tagjijt commune in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region experienced significant flooding due to heavy rainfall, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. The floods caused road closures, inundated homes and schools, and led to the overflowing of the Oued Seyad river, a phenomenon not witnessed in nearly four decades.
These events underscore the importance of accurate weather forecasting and preparedness in mitigating the impacts of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. As climate change continues to influence global weather systems, understanding and adapting to these changes will be crucial for the safety and well-being of communities across Morocco.
