US Reaffirms Support for Moroccan Autonomy Plan in Western Sahara
In a significant diplomatic development, the United States has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region. This announcement came following a high-level meeting in Washington D.C. between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
The US has consistently backed Morocco’s proposal as a “serious, credible, and realistic” solution to the decades-long conflict. This stance aligns with the views of numerous other countries, including France and Spain, who see the autonomy plan as a viable path towards peace and stability in the region.
The Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, proposes a self-governing Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty. This plan emphasizes local governance over key areas like education, culture, and economic development, while Morocco retains control over defense and foreign affairs.
The US’s continued support for the autonomy plan underscores its commitment to a peaceful resolution in Western Sahara. This approach prioritizes dialogue and negotiation, aiming to foster lasting stability and prosperity for the region’s people.
