Egypt Fears Regional War as Tensions Flare in Lebanon Following Golan Heights Incident
Egypt has issued a stark warning about the potential for a new war in Lebanon following a recent incident in the occupied Golan Heights, raising concerns of a wider regional conflict. The incident, which saw a rocket strike the village of Majdal Shams, has further inflamed tensions in the region. While Israel blames Hezbollah for the attack and vows retaliation, the Lebanese group denies any involvement.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stressed the urgent need to support Lebanon and shield its people from the devastation of war. They called upon influential global powers to intervene and prevent further escalation, emphasizing the potential threat to international peace and security.
Adding to the volatile situation, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister, Abdallah Bou Habib, cautioned that a significant Israeli attack could ignite a regional war. His statement followed the rocket strike in Majdal Shams, which tragically claimed the lives of 12 people.
Bou Habib revealed to Reuters that Lebanon had urged Washington to encourage Israeli restraint amidst the escalating tensions. Conversely, the United States has called on the Lebanese government to rein in Hezbollah.
This incident comes at a time when the region is already grappling with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. Egypt reiterated its call for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, emphasizing the urgent need to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and prevent further destabilization of the region.
The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for miscalculation and escalation looming large. The international community faces a critical challenge in navigating these tensions and preventing a wider conflict with potentially devastating consequences.
