Morocco’s Chief Prosecutor Meets with Gabonese Justice Minister to Strengthen Judicial Cooperation
Morocco’s Journey Towards Judicial Independence: A Gabonese Perspective
Rabat – In a move signaling strengthening judicial ties between Morocco and Gabon, Hassan Daki, Morocco’s Prosecutor General at the Court of Cassation, welcomed Paul Marie Gondjout, Gabon’s Minister of Justice, to Rabat on Wednesday. Gondjout, accompanied by a delegation of Gabonese judicial officials, is on an official visit to the Kingdom.
The meeting served as a platform to showcase Morocco’s significant strides in bolstering judicial independence. Daki highlighted the progress made since 2017, particularly emphasizing the independence of the public prosecution following the national dialogue on reforming the justice system.
Daki elaborated on the Public Prosecution’s role in implementing criminal justice policy, a process documented in an annual report that provides a comprehensive overview of the activities of public prosecutions across Morocco.
The meeting also provided a valuable opportunity for Gondjout to gain insight into Morocco’s judicial structure. Daki outlined the mechanisms for developing judicial administration, focusing on the collaborative efforts between the Public Prosecution, the High Council of the Judiciary, and the Ministry of Justice.
Gondjout expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, stating that it presented a unique opportunity to learn from Morocco’s experience in fostering judicial independence. This sentiment underscores the growing international recognition of Morocco’s efforts in strengthening its judicial system.
Morocco’s commitment to judicial independence aligns with global trends emphasizing the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary. The United Nations, through its Sustainable Development Goal 16, emphasizes the need for “peace, justice, and strong institutions.” A key aspect of this goal is ensuring access to justice for all, which requires an independent and effective judicial system.
The exchange of knowledge and best practices between Morocco and Gabon signifies a positive step towards strengthening judicial cooperation within Africa. As both nations navigate the complexities of legal reform, sharing experiences and fostering dialogue will be crucial in building robust and independent judicial systems.
