Schools in Southeastern Morocco Suspend Classes Due to Heavy Rain Warnings
Several regions in southeastern Morocco have taken the precautionary measure of suspending school classes due to severe weather warnings, prioritizing the safety of students and staff.
Faced with forecasts of heavy rain and potential flooding, educational institutions in the provinces of Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Zagora, Tata, and Errachidia announced the closure of schools. This decision, made in conjunction with local authorities, aims to mitigate risks associated with treacherous road conditions and potential flash floods.
The regional directorate of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports in Tinghir confirmed the suspension of classes for both Friday, September 6th, and Saturday, September 7th. This decision follows a severe weather alert issued by the national meteorological service, warning of thunderstorms and torrential rainfall in the region.
Similarly, the regional directorate in Zagora announced a one-day closure, with schools expected to reopen on Monday. In Errachidia, the Skoura school district also declared a suspension of classes for Saturday, affecting all educational institutions within its jurisdiction.
Local authorities have been proactive in their response, issuing warnings to residents and urging them to avoid wadis (dry riverbeds) and other areas prone to flash flooding. These measures reflect a growing awareness of the dangers posed by extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly common in many parts of the world.
The decision to close schools underscores the importance of prioritizing safety during severe weather events. By taking proactive steps, authorities in southeastern Morocco are demonstrating their commitment to protecting the well-being of their communities.
