A recent report by Campus France reveals a fascinating trend: Morocco has taken the lead as the top country sending students to France for their studies. This highlights the enduring academic and cultural ties between the two nations.
During the 2022/2023 academic year, over 45,162 Moroccan students enrolled in French higher education institutions. This impressive figure places Morocco significantly ahead of Algeria, which came in second with 32,147 students.
While this number reflects a slight 3% decrease compared to the previous year, it represents a considerable 13% increase over the past five years. This upward trend underscores the enduring appeal of French higher education among Moroccan students.
France remains a global magnet for international students, welcoming over 403,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds in the 2022/2023 academic year. Following Morocco and Algeria, China secured the third position with 25,605 students. However, China experienced a 7% decrease compared to the previous year and a more significant 15% decline over the past five years.
The list of top countries sending students to France reflects a diverse global landscape, including Italy (20,028 students), Senegal (15,251 students), and Tunisia (14,291 students).

Driven by the ongoing conflict in their home country, the number of Ukrainian students in France has more than doubled in just one year, marking an astounding 111% increase.
