Urgent Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Hail Expected, Up to 120mm in Some Regions
Morocco Braces for Heavy Rain and Hailstorms
The Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology (DMN) has issued a severe weather warning for several regions across the country, forecasting heavy rain and hailstorms from Thursday, September 19th to Friday, September 20th, 2024.
The red alert, the highest level of warning, highlights the potential for significant rainfall, with some areas expected to receive between 70 and 120 millimeters (2.75 to 4.72 inches). This level of precipitation can lead to flash floods, especially in areas with poor drainage systems. The regions of Smara and Assa-Zag are particularly at risk, with the heavy downpours expected to begin Thursday afternoon and continue until late Friday night.
An orange alert, indicating a moderate risk, has also been issued for several other regions, including Tata, Zagora, Taroudant, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Errachidia, and Figuig. These areas are forecast to experience thunderstorms and hail, with rainfall amounts ranging from 30 to 60 millimeters (1.18 to 2.36 inches). The DMN predicts these storms will hit on Friday afternoon and persist until late Friday night.
Heavy rainfall events in Morocco can have significant impacts, including:
Flash Floods: The sudden influx of water can overwhelm drainage systems, leading to rapid flooding in urban and rural areas.
Landslides: Heavy rain can saturate the soil, increasing the risk of landslides, particularly in mountainous regions.
Disruption to Infrastructure: Flooding and landslides can damage roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure, impacting transportation and communication networks.
Damage to Crops and Property: Flooding can cause significant damage to crops, homes, and businesses, leading to economic losses.
The DMN urges residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions, including:
Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and warnings issued by the DMN and local authorities.
Prepare for Flooding: Clear drainage systems, secure loose objects, and consider moving valuables to higher ground.
Avoid Unnecessary Travel: If possible, postpone travel to affected areas during the severe weather event.
Exercise Caution: Be aware of potential hazards such as flooded roads, fast-flowing water, and landslides.
By staying informed and taking appropriate precautions, residents can help mitigate the risks associated with these severe weather events.
