Orange Weather Alert: Thunderstorms and Hail Expected Across Morocco
Morocco Braces for Thunderstorms and Strong Winds
The Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology (DMG) has issued an orange-level weather alert, warning of thunderstorms and strong winds expected to impact several regions of the country.
The alert, issued on August 31, 2024, predicts thunderstorms with precipitation between 15-30 mm, accompanied by hail and gusts of wind. These storms are anticipated to hit between 2 PM and 10 PM local time in the provinces of Errachidia, Midelt, Boulemane, Guercif, Jerada, Taourirt, Oujda-Angad, and Berkane.
This warning comes on the heels of similar weather events earlier in the week. On Wednesday and Thursday, several provinces, including Oujda-Angad, Jerada, Taourirt, Taza, Guercif, Boulemane, Al Hoceima, Ifrane, Khénifra, Midelt, Sefrou, and Driouch, experienced heavy thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds, prompting the DMG to issue orange-level alerts on both days.
While these regions brace for stormy conditions, the DMG predicts relatively hot weather will persist in the extreme south and southeast of the country.
The forecast also includes low cloud cover and foggy conditions in the morning and night across the northern and central plains, northwest of the southern provinces, and north of the eastern region. Localized fog is expected to develop west of the Mediterranean coast and the central coasts.
Strong wind gusts are anticipated in the south of the eastern region, the High and Middle Atlas Mountains, the southeast, and the southern coasts.
Minimum temperatures will range from 13-17°C in the Atlas Mountains, 19-24°C in the southeast and south of the Saharan provinces, and 16-21°C in the rest of the country. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise slightly or remain largely unchanged.
The DMG’s forecast also includes maritime conditions, predicting rough to high seas in the Mediterranean, slight seas in the Strait of Gibraltar, and slight to rough seas along the Atlantic coast.
