Morocco Sees a Surge in Women Leaders: A New Era of Representation
Morocco is experiencing a heartening shift in its leadership landscape. A recent report, attached to the 2025 Finance Bill and focusing on gender-responsive budgeting, reveals a significant increase in the number of women taking on leadership roles across various government sectors and organizations.
This progress is evident in the impressive statistic that women now hold 53% of leadership positions in Morocco. This achievement reflects a dedicated effort to empower women and provide them with equal opportunities to excel in their careers.
Breaking Barriers Across Sectors
This wave of female leadership is not confined to a single sector. The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs stands out as a prime example, with women holding 46% of leadership roles in central administrations and a remarkable 53% in external services.
The field of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation also showcases this positive trend. Women represent 44% of leaders in central administrations and 37% in diplomatic missions and consulates, demonstrating their growing influence in international relations.
Other sectors demonstrating significant progress include:
Telecommunications: Women hold 46.2% of leadership positions.
Vocational Training: Women represent 45% of administrative positions.
High Commission for Planning: Women occupy 45% of leadership roles.
Sustainable Development, Administration Reform, and Beyond
The commitment to gender balance extends to crucial areas like sustainable development and administration reform. In these sectors, women hold 42.4% and 40.6% of leadership positions, respectively. This representation ensures that women’s voices and perspectives are integrated into shaping Morocco’s future.
Furthermore, women are making their mark in sectors traditionally dominated by men:
Ministry of National Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy: Women hold 39.73% of leadership positions.
Energy Transition, Water, and Human Rights: Women represent 33%, 31.25%, and 30.43% of leadership roles, respectively.
Industry and Trade: Women occupy 29.02% of leadership positions.
Economy and Finance: Women hold 27% of leadership roles.
Transport and Logistics: Women represent 26.4% of leadership roles.
Challenges and Continued Progress
While these figures paint a picture of positive change, challenges remain. Sectors like Justice, National Education, and Prison Administration, despite showing growth in overall female representation, still lag behind in terms of women in leadership roles.
For instance, women hold only 18% of leadership positions in Justice, 19% in National Education, and a mere 7% in Prison Administration. These disparities highlight the
