Moroccan Health Workers Union Urges Prime Minister to Halt Healthcare “Farce
Moroccan Healthcare Workers Plead with Prime Minister to Halt Erosion of Rights
The National Health Federation (FNS) has issued an urgent plea to Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, demanding his intervention in what they call a “farce of setbacks” within the healthcare sector. The FNS, affiliated with the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), argues that a current sectoral dialogue, touted as a means to address healthcare worker concerns, is nothing more than a staged performance, lacking legitimacy and jeopardizing hard-won rights.
The FNS contends that instead of fostering progress, this so-called dialogue is being used to roll back previously established benefits and protections for healthcare professionals. They point to a concerning trend of diminishing working conditions and a lack of meaningful engagement from authorities in addressing their concerns.
This call for action comes at a time when healthcare systems globally are facing immense pressure. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates a global shortage of 10 million healthcare workers, with the most significant gaps in low- and middle-income countries like Morocco. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed the vulnerabilities of healthcare systems, highlighting the critical need for investment in and support of healthcare workers.
The FNS emphasizes the urgency of the situation, urging Prime Minister Akhannouch to take immediate action to salvage the situation. They are calling for a genuine and productive social dialogue, one that prioritizes the implementation of the December 29th agreement. This agreement, reached after extensive negotiations, outlines key commitments to improve working conditions, address salary disparities, and enhance the overall healthcare system.
The FNS’s appeal underscores the vital role healthcare workers play in any society. Their well-being and job satisfaction are directly linked to the quality of healthcare delivered to citizens. A failure to address their concerns could have far-reaching consequences, potentially impacting the accessibility and effectiveness of healthcare services across Morocco..getElementById(id)) {return;}
