Tangier Hosts High-Level Blue Belt Initiative Conference
Tangier to Host High-Level Ministerial Conference on Blue Belt Initiative
The Moroccan city of Tangier is set to host the third High-Level Ministerial Conference on the Blue Belt Initiative, focusing on “Building a Foundation for Stimulating Food and Employment within the Framework of a Blue Economy Development Approach.”
This significant event, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests in partnership with the World Bank, will also mark the official launch of the first “Blue Belt Week.” This week-long event will feature a series of activities dedicated to promoting sustainable development and investment opportunities within the blue economy.
The Blue Belt Initiative, launched in 2017, represents a collaborative effort among African coastal and island nations to unlock the vast potential of their ocean economies while prioritizing sustainability and inclusivity. The initiative focuses on key areas such as fisheries management, aquaculture, marine tourism, renewable energy, and maritime transport.
This year’s conference holds particular importance as it seeks to address the pressing issue of food security through the lens of the blue economy. With the global population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, finding sustainable ways to feed the world is paramount. The ocean, covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, offers a wealth of resources that can contribute significantly to global food security.
The conference will bring together government ministers, high-level representatives from international organizations, private sector leaders, and civil society actors. Together, they will engage in dialogue, share best practices, and explore innovative solutions to harness the potential of the blue economy for food security and job creation.
The Blue Belt Initiative aligns with several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
SDG 2: Zero Hunger: By promoting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, the initiative aims to improve nutrition and food security for millions of people.
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: The blue economy holds immense potential for job creation, particularly in developing countries.
* SDG 14: Life Below Water: The initiative emphasizes the importance of protecting and sustainably managing marine ecosystems.
The conference in Tangier presents a crucial opportunity to advance the Blue Belt Initiative and accelerate progress towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for Africa’s coastal communities and beyond.
