Mohammed Weld Al-Rashid Elected New President of Morocco’s House of Councillors
A New Era for Morocco’s House of Councillors: Mohamed Wolde Rachid Elected President
Rabat, Morocco – In a significant political development, Mohamed Wolde Rachid, a prominent figure in the Istiqlal Party, has been elected as the new President of Morocco’s House of Councillors. The election, held on Saturday, October 12th, 2024, marks a transition of leadership within the upper house of Morocco’s bicameral parliament.
Wolde Rachid, son of the influential Istiqlal Party leader Hamdi Wolde Rachid, secured a decisive victory, garnering 94 out of the 104 valid votes cast. His unopposed candidacy, endorsed by the majority coalition, reflects the party’s strong standing within the House of Councillors.
The election process, stipulated by Article 63 of the Moroccan Constitution, unfolded under the watchful eye of Mahmoud Archane, a member of the Socialist Democratic Movement Party. Archane, as the oldest member of the House, presided over the session until the election of the new President.
This mid-term election, a key feature of Morocco’s parliamentary system, ensures a periodic renewal of leadership within the House of Councillors. The position, previously held by Ennaam Mayara, also of the Istiqlal Party, plays a crucial role in shaping legislative agendas and fostering dialogue within the Moroccan political landscape.
Wolde Rachid’s election brings with it a wealth of political experience and a legacy deeply rooted in Morocco’s political history. His leadership is expected to further solidify the Istiqlal Party’s influence within the House of Councillors and contribute to the ongoing development of Morocco’s parliamentary democracy.
While the election proceeded smoothly, the absence of 15 out of the 119 councillors during this significant constitutional event raised questions. This absenteeism, while not impacting the outcome, underscores the complexities and dynamics inherent in any political system.
As Wolde Rachid assumes his new role, the focus will shift towards his legislative priorities and his approach to navigating the diverse political landscape of the House of Councillors. His leadership will undoubtedly shape the chamber’s contributions to Morocco’s political and socio-economic development in the years to come.
